History of Plain View Press

Plain View Press owes it’s origin to Susan Bright, author, poet, activist, who published her own books for years and then began extending that expertise to others by founding the press in 1974. She and her husband John C. Andrews ran the press for years, with Pam Knight providing production and technical support starting in 2009. The orientation of the press around activism stems from Susan’s commitment to the environment, and to speaking out for worthy social causes. She believed that the voice of individuals make the difference in political activism and social change. That is the foundation of Plain View Press, which reduces the barriers to publication for those with something important to say via the written word. Thus, the history of Plain View Press is really a tribute to Susan Bright, and how she interacted with the world.

As a poet, Susan authored 19 books and as an activist, she fought for many a cause, as evidenced by her Earthfamilia blog posts. You can read her biography visit her memorial page.

“It is said that the thirst of Earth’s great trees calls water
from depths which are invisible
causing springs to flow”

As a cofounder and active blogger on Earthfamilia.com, Susan’s friend and colleague posted this entry for Susan Bright which tells the story of her brilliance.

Our Gratitude to John C. Andrews, Susan’ husband and co-founder of Plainview Press, who generously worked to keep the press going and who passed away in Feb 2012. He was a one-of-a-kind person, an Austin original.
